So, I'm going to follow up guill's off topic post with my own hobby (which I do on the side to keep me happy, as I'm doing IT/Computer Studies in College right now) by talking about music. Not composing with real instruments though. Because for 1 I'm too lazy to learn any instrument (although I must have basic piano knowledge for this) and 2 I'm poor. I mean me not my parents. I don't sponge off their money.

Yes that's right - electronic music production. The worst of its kind. Yes I have produced Dubstep in my time but it's boring and all been done before, so I like to make the wonderfull jazzy mind of its own - Drum & Bass. In its roots, there are influences of Blues, Jazz, 80's stuff, and all the mellow-ish genres in between. Of course, if you listen to the right tracks, you'll know what I'm talking about. No not bands/producers such as Pendulum, or Chase & Status, they make more heavy stuff. I mean Roygreen & Protone, Random Movement, S.P.Y, High Contrast etc etc...

So anyway I'll get right into this seeing as though I'm now dribbling on...

This is a song called Precipitation - a work in progress so it's not finished and there are bits missing right now like the intro, 2nd "drop" and an outro. Here is the sequencer:

If you're wondering what software I'm using, it's Propellerheads Reason 5. The latest version is actually 7 as of now but I can't upgrade yet. Now some of you may be wondering "THAT'S JUST A LOAD OF LINES AND PROGRESSIONS" well you're right. That's what it is. It's a bunch of notes on a piano roll, just like what a sequencer is supposed to do - play notes. There are some lines though that aren't straight, which are automation lanes to make certain knobs on the synths and samplers do things whilst the track is running in the sequencer. There is more stuff along to the right but that's just experimental at the moment. (There's a lot of stuff going on with the drums, which is what my track mostly relies on!) Moving on...

This is famously known as the mixer! The place where all of the instruments' audio signals are sent to, put into the hardware and out of my speakers! (or monitors if you're a more familiar audiophile like me) I can change the levels of each sound going into it, tweak the bass, treble, external effect strength and panning of left and right speakers for a more dynamic sound :) ISN'T THIS EXCITING?

Okay now these are where it all comes from. These are the instruments (the synths and samplers) - which are on a virtual "rack" like a metal rack they have in studios and stuff? you know what I'm talking about. They all have crazy lights and stuff haha ;) They're all collapsed in a compact format to keep my project clean, I would talk about them but there are so many I don't think it would be worth the time. All you need to know is that some of these virtual machines create a sound that I made (aka basses, leads and pads/harmonics) and some are drums that were pre-recorded or synthesized by someone else for my leisure.

There is also a button that let's you see the back of the rack, where you can connect virtual wires and stuff to mess around with what sounds and effects go where and I'd love to show you all it but again it wouldn't be worth the time!

I also DJ, too, with a physical controller that are like turntables but connect directly into my computer and the decks don't move :( It was the cheapest I could find until I have enough for some real turntables and setup etc...

So anyway, that is my hobby, it keeps me happy and occupied while I'm bored and the girlfriend is away ;) Interested or not, it's just what I'd like to share :)

Thanks for reading!

That's right - this software is one of a kind that let's you learn about cable routing, analogue synthesizers and experimentation :) 100GB? woah what was it called? Native Instruments Komplete or something?

That would be for like other digital audio workstations such as Fruity Loops, Ableton Live, Steinbergs Cubase etc..

It has a massive collection of drum samples, SFX, instruments, VSTs, synthesizers. Well, since it's called Komplete it just has every single package Native Instruments have ever released.

I forgot to mention in this post that I use Native Instruments' Traktor Pro 2 to DJ (aka mixing other people's songs). It's very fun, really nice to look at, and super easy to use when you keep at it :) Experimented with so many people's songs on that software, as some of you may have heard on Ventrilo once or twice!
